AIMS

  1. 1. Develop the skills to create and query a database.
  2. 2. Develop the skills to enter & manipulate data from a spreadsheet package.
  3. 3. Develop the skills to produce & manipulate data from a graphics package.
  4. 4. Develop good work habits in the use and care of the computer and equipment.

The purpose of this FETAC module is to provide learners with an understanding of and practical experience in the use of the common generic applications. It provides an introduction to computer applications which will enable the learner to use the computer in a working environment and to proceed to further modules in each of the applications.

The Specific Learning Outcomes are grouped as three units:

Introduction to Databases (Access)

  1. * Identify applications suitable for database
  2. * Access a database system, identify component parts
  3. * Create a database file, enter data, edit data, add records, edit records
  4. * Browse, query, sort databases
  5. * output data to screen and printer

Introduction to Spreadsheets (Excel)

  1. * Identify applications suitable for spreadsheets
  2. * Access a spreadsheet package, enter numeric and text data
  3. * Generate formulae using cell references and arithmetic operators
  4. * Replicate formulae using relative cell references
  5. * Insert rows, columns, adjust column widths, format entries
  6. * Use sum and average functions
  7. * Sort, print, save spreadsheets

Introduction to Graphics (Word Drawing)

  1. * Access and operate a graphics package
  2. * Produce basic geometrical shapes, use freehand drawing, input clipart
  3. * Enhance and edit graphics using colour, shape and size
  4. * Print using landscape and portrait, enter and enhance text
